See where is Medovo situated on the sattelite photos provided by Google Maps.
The village is only 18 km. northwest of Pomorie and the same distance southwest of Nessebar.
Prelude
The village is only 18 km. west of the biggest Bulgarian Black Sea resort - Sunny Beach, and 25 km. north of the regional center - the city of Burgas. The village is situated on the most eastern slopes of the Aitos section of the Balkan Range, has a mild climate and a multitude of mineral springs. North-west of Medovo flows the Aheloi river, on which is built the Aheloi dam - one of the most beatiful and clean dams in the Burgas region, which is also suitable for fishing tours. The authorities and the population of Medovo have interests in developing the green tourism and have the ambition to offer several pedestrian tour routs for those who are passionate about nature and history. One of the suggestions is a one-day tour called "In the footsteps of zar Simeon the Great", which will show you and tell you the story of one of the most noted events in the Bulgarian Medieval history - the Great Battle of Aheloi on the 20-th August 917, in which the Bulgarians decisevely defeated the Byzantine army. This was the biggest triumph of zar Simeon's gift of a military leader and strategist and cleared the way for the economical and cultural Golden Age of Medieval Bulgaria.
Geography and History
The village is established by four brothers, who moved to this place from the Huhla village, in the southern part of Bulgaria near the city of Ivailovgrad. The name Medovo (meaning "honey's place") has come a long time ago from a rich turkish inhabitant with lots of bee-hives. It is also considered that in the village surroundings has been the basecamp of the Byzantine army during the famous battle of Aheloy - one of the greatest and deadliest battles in Europe, which the Bulgarians won decisively. This battle has taken place on the fields between the nowadays towns of Aheloy, Pomorie and Kableshkovo, where from time to time bones are still being digged by the farmers.
Cultural & Natural landmarks
The village is situated on a hilly slope with a northern exposure, and is very close to the Biberna summit above the town of Kableshkovo, where it is told that the Bulgarian zar Simeon the Great has observed and led our army in the Aheloy battle on the 20.08.917. Once you climb the hills above the village you can see a wanderfull view towards Sunny Beach, Nessebur, Ravda, Aheloy, and from the Biberna summit you can also see Pomorie, Burgas, Chernomoretz and Sozopol (see the photo gallery). This locality is especially favourable for the development of the para- and delta-gliding extreme sports, and these are the plans of the national extreme sports clubs, but these plans are still under way, and lots more should be done. The main road Burgas - Kableshkovo - Dyulinski mountain pass is only about 700 meters from the first village houses. Medovo also benefits from a community center/library/cinema building, unfortunately non-operational at the moment, and a functioning kindergarten, newly refurbished orthodox church, and recently built modern electricity-distribution station. The village unfortunately still doesn't have sewerage system built, but that\'s one of the priorities of the municipality council at the moment, together with several infrastructural projects for making the road surface better, building of a balneological center and increasing the percentige of the small business in the village. At the moment there are several small shops for food products, 2-3 cafes and one nice restaurant for excursions of the "Bulgarian village" type. In the autumn of 2005 a winery house tourism center began to be biuld, and the ideas for it include the development of the so called wine-tours. This establishment is going to revive the economy of the village and the interests of the large business to it. The presence of unlimited supplies of such a beneficial natural resourse as the unrivalled in its qualities mineral water, flowing directly into the village's water pipes and taps, as well as its geography and closeness to the modern recreational destinations like Sunny Beach, Ravda and Pomorie (15-18 km away), defines its future development as a center for the green and balneological tourism in the region.
Events
A few years ago the old traditions were revivied and now every year on the most important national holidays there are celebrations showing the visitors the local dances, costumes and dresses, traditions and crafts. They are normally held on the wide lawn behind the library, on such holidays like Christmas, Easter, and several national holidays in the middle of the spring, late summer, as well as in the beginning of the autumn. For more information please keep in touch, we are going to try to post these events in the "News" section of this site.
